Through the LIBRARY it is possible to consult the data sheet of several important codices that enable to reconstruct the written culture of the patriarchate of Aquileia. Moreover, for many codices, the complete reproductions are made available, which makes this site a true virtual library of patriarchal Friuli.

Sacramentary of Fulda

  • Fulda, early 11th century; parchment; mm 240 × 210; ff. 116 + I.
  • Udine, Archivio Capitolare, 1.

Written and miniated in Fulda for the Bremen-Hamburg diocese, the codex arrived in Friuli during Poppo’s patriarchy.

The Sacramentary was probably manufactured for the Bremen-Hamburg diocese; this can be inferred by the emphasis given on a decorated page to the mass of St. Willehad (f. 69v), the patron saint of that diocese. The manuscript was at Aquileia probably already in the first half of the eleventh century, perhaps at the time of patriarch Poppo (1019-1042), whose name is connected with the Evangelistary that was also manufactured at Fulda and would soon after come to the patriarchal city (file IV.1). This work, together with others, passed from the Chapter of Aquileia to the Chapter of Udine, in 1751, upon the patriarchy suppression.

The manuscript, a Gregorian sacramentary, was carried out through the cooperation of two scribes of the monastery of Fulda. Its rich decoration is made up of a large number of decorated initials and pages with miniatures that give prominence to the main celebrations of the liturgical year and the feasts of some saints: St. Boniface baptises the Frisians and the Saint’s martyrdom (f. 42v); the Announcement to Zacharias and the Baptist’s naming (f. 46r); St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s martyrdom (f. 47r); St. Lawrence’s martyrdom (f. 53r); All Saints’ Day (f. 66v); St. Martin gives his mantle and Christ appears to him in a dream (f. 70r); St. Andrew’s martyrdom (f. 71v).
