Through the LIBRARY it is possible to consult the data sheet of several important codices that enable to reconstruct the written culture of the patriarchate of Aquileia. Moreover, for many codices, the complete reproductions are made available, which makes this site a true virtual library of patriarchal Friuli.

Questiones on Aristotle’s works

  • Paris, late 13th century; parchment; mm 335 × 250; ff. 103.
  • Udine, Archivio di Stato, fragment 231.

A scholastic textbook with commentaries on Aristotle’s works of Paris provenance which was used by the students of the Patriarchate.

The text contains various Questiones debated at the University of Paris on some Aristotle’s works: Methereorum liber, De celo, De anima. The most substantial part of the codex (ff. 1r-93v), which is mutilated, contains Peters of Auvergne’s Questiones on the eight books of Aristotle’s Fisica. Peter of Auvergne († 1304), Thomas Aquinas’ disciple, was one of the main commentators of Aristotle’s works. Not much is known on the history of this codex: enough though to establish its provenance from Paris and his subsequent use in the Italian area, particularly in Friuli. The manuscript, which belongs to the Fund ‘Varmo’, is nowadays kept at the State Archives of Udine.
