Through the LIBRARY it is possible to consult the data sheet of several important codices that enable to reconstruct the written culture of the patriarchate of Aquileia. Moreover, for many codices, the complete reproductions are made available, which makes this site a true virtual library of patriarchal Friuli.

Medical manuscript

  • Early 14th century; parchment; mm 525 × 365; ff. I, 234, I’.
  • Udine, Archivio di Stato, fragment 14.
A small fragment of a code of medicine written in France and used in Cividale del Friuli between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

It is a small very damaged and recently restored two-folium fragment whose unidentified text is still legible, although with some difficulties: «… Tisis est consumptio substantialis humectationis corporis, immutacio augmentationis in diminucionem. Nascitur autem multis modis …». It is worth being signalled because it is the oldest medical manuscript circulating in Friuli. Written in France in the thirteenth century, as it is evidenced by its script, the codex was used at Cividale where it was dismembered and then used as a cover-board for some breviaturae of the notary Stefano Candelari in 1325. The hypothesis that it was part of the professional endowment of a doctor of Cividale in the same thirteenth century is not at all out of place.
