Through the LIBRARY it is possible to consult the data sheet of several important codices that enable to reconstruct the written culture of the patriarchate of Aquileia. Moreover, for many codices, the complete reproductions are made available, which makes this site a true virtual library of patriarchal Friuli.

Bartolus de Saxoferrato, Commentaria in Codicem

  • 14th century; parchment; mm 425 × 275; 1 folium.
  • Udine, Archivio di Stato, fragment 97.

Bartolus is one of the major commentators of Justinian’s Corpus iuris: this fragment belongs to his Commentary to the Codex.

Bartolus lectured the Codex in the years 1342-1343 at Pisa or in the Studium of Perugia, where he had moved in the course of that year. Acknowledged as one of the greatest interpreter of the Corpus iuris of his time, his personality, «with his huge work as a thinker, even exceeds», as wrote Francesco Calasso «his stature, albeit major, as a lawmaker, and rightly holds his place among the humanly highest figures of the Italian Trecento, next to Dante, Giotto, and Catherine of Siena». The presented fragment of the Codex datable to the fourteenth century, which is now kept at the State Archives of Udine, comes from the registers and breviaturae of the notary Giacomo Miilini from San Daniele del Friuli (1579-83).
