Through the LIBRARY it is possible to consult the data sheet of several important codices that enable to reconstruct the written culture of the patriarchate of Aquileia. Moreover, for many codices, the complete reproductions are made available, which makes this site a true virtual library of patriarchal Friuli.

Antiphonal of Cividale

  • 13th-14th century; parchment; mm 510 × 355; ff. II, 156 (172), I’; square notation on red pentagram.
  • Cividale del Friuli, Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Archivi e Biblioteca, codex XLI.

The codex, which is seriously mutilated, was written for the Church of Cividale and evidences how complex were the relations between the different liturgical-music centres along the Middle Ages.

The antiphonal consists of the following main sections: temporale from the 1st Advent Sunday to the Epiphany octave (f. 1r); sanctorale with the proper of Saints from St. Fabian and St. Sebastian (January 20th) to the Announcement (March 25th) (f. 69r); temporale from the Septuagesima Sunday to Tuesday in diebus rogationum (f. 90r); common of a martyr for the Easter time (f. 152r); proper sanctorale from St. George (April 23rd/24th) to Saints Alexander Eventius and Theodolus (May 3rd) (f. 154r). The codex comes from the local collegiate church of Cividale del Friuli, and the concordances with other codices induce to think that it was written for the same institution. The collected material does not cover the whole liturgical year and the current conditions of the manuscript evidence serious mutilations suffered in the course of time. Beyond the failing parts, the extremely precarious condition of the codex ending part is to be reported as well: only little more than the half of the original manuscript is supposably survived.
