Through the LIBRARY it is possible to consult the data sheet of several important codices that enable to reconstruct the written culture of the patriarchate of Aquileia. Moreover, for many codices, the complete reproductions are made available, which makes this site a true virtual library of patriarchal Friuli.

Louis of Teck’s Antiphonal

  • Udine, 15th century (1412-1420); parchment; mm 495 × 375; ff. 315.
  • Udine, Biblioteca Arcivescovile, 94.

An Antiphonal copied at the beginning of the fifteenth century in the castle of Udine, the patriarchal residence of the time, by some chaplains-copyists of the patriarch Louis of Teck.

This is an Antiphonal that gathers in a sole sequence both antiphons and responsories of the liturgical year and the Saints’ feasts, with accompaniment of a Hufnagel notation on tetragram. Remarkable are the Visit to the sepulchre on Easter Eve (ff. 132v-133v) and the procession to the baptismal font on Easter feast (f. 136r). The script is marked by large black-red-blue initials; several other initials are finely illuminated with leafy interlaces and zoomorphic motives. The codex, bound with wooden boards covered by damp leather with bosses on the angles and in the middle, belonged to St. Mary’s in the Castle church of Udine through the fifteenth century. Part of the interest for this antiphonal «in littera thetonicali et peroptime miniatus» arises by the circumstance that it was copied at the beginning of the fifteenth century together with another choir book (Udine, Biblioteca Arcivescovile, ms. 93) in the castle of Udine, the patriarchal residence of the time, by some chaplains-copyists of the patriarch Louis of Teck.
